Frequently Asked Questions - Search Engine Marketing

General Terms

Q: What is search engine marketing (SEM)?
Search Engine Marketing (also known as “SEM”) is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their rankings and visibility in search engine results pages. Two SEM tools include services you might have heard:  SEO (search engine optimization), and PPC (Pay Per Click).

Q: What is search engine optimization (SEO)?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of getting a site more traffic from search engines via the main unpaid search results (which in turn are called "natural" or “organic” search results). SEO techniques typically attempt to get specific phrases to rank highly on search engines. If effective, these “natural” listings account for almost 80% of all search engine traffic to web sites  (source: Forrester Research).

Q: What is Pay Per Click (PPC)?
Pay Per Click (also called CPC, or Cost Per Click) is an advertising model used on search engines (and sites that choose to put ads on their site) where advertisers only pay when a user actually clicks on an ad to visit the advertiser's website. Depending on the source, PPC accounts for 10-15% of all search traffic to web sites.

Q: How will people find my web site?
First of all, advertise your site like you would normally advertise your physical location. Put the web address everywhere that you currently advertise: Advertisements, business cards, letterhead, checks, fax cover sheets, flyers, brochures, signs, etc.

Beyond those, you might consider a strategy of search engine marketing, which includes search engine optimization, and Pay Per Click management. If done right, your site can get ranked highly on search engines, traffic to your site, and dollars in your pocket.

Q: When we built our web site before, the designers submitted our site to thousands of search engines, but we hardly got any hits. In fact, we got a lot of spam email. What happened?
Can you name even dozens of search engines? Honestly, 99% of those "search engines" are email collectors, who turn around and sell your email address and company information to the highest bidder (who are we kidding; they'll sell it to the lowest bidder, too). That's why you received the spam.

As for the "submission", here's what they did for you. They went to a free or low priced search engine submission service, and entered your basic information (and maybe some ill-thought out keywords) into the form. Then, they clicked submit. That's their "submission" process. It doesn't work.

Q: So then, smart guy, how DO I get my site ranked high on search engines?

Thanks for noticing!

After a time, and all by itself, your site will probably be ranked high on your company name, if it's unique. But rarely on any other real phrases.

If you want your site to get traffic from search engines, search engine optimization (also known as “SEO”) and/or Pay Per Click options may be necessary, depending on your required timeframe.

Search engine optimization is a longer-term solution; proper “SEO” can typically get your site ranked within 4-6 months. Be prepared to invest at least a few hundred a month for this service. We will be glad to help you achieve top search engine rankings- and we're very good at getting search engine rankings for our clients - but it does take some time to accomplish real results. Once those results are accomplished, you'll be very glad that you had us perform the service.

Q: How soon can I expect search engines to list my site?
The search engines can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to list your site. However, high rankings on specific keywords are another story, and they can months to attain rankings on the top search engines. If you have a short timeline, you may want to consider having us manage a pay per click campaign.

Q: What's the earliest I can expect visitors to come to my site from search engines?
You don't need to wait for weeks or months for the search engines to "kick in". If you are looking for immediate search engine traffic, consider a Pay Per Click strategy. If you are willing and able to pay for high rankings, you can be on the first page of Google, Yahoo and MSN today. Talk to us about this option.

Q: Can I optimize my web site myself?
Sure. You can also represent yourself in court, shingle your own roof, and build your own computer. But you don’t do those things because you aren’t a professional and you’ll probably mess it up. Maybe you’ll get lucky and you make it to page 2 of Google. Yeah.

Except that if you make it to page two, only 3% of your market will see your ‘excellent’ placement (source - Forrester Research). What’s that going to do for you?  If it’s important to your business to get those 97% of searchers to have the opportunity to click to your site, don’t be messing around with optimization yourself. Talk to IntelliSites about SEO today.

Q: I'm just looking for someone to analyze the existing “SEO” performed on my site.
One of our local Albany, NY SEO competitors charges $1,500 for an analysis that at best should be $500. We’re available for a review of your current site’s SEO, at no charge. If it comes to a more in-depth analysis, we can perform that service too, probably for a few hundred dollars. Talk to us about your site’s existing SEO at no charge.

Q:  I’ve had some other company perform “SEO” on my site. I’ve got a sneaky suspicion that little was done, or the wrong stuff was done. Can you help?
The game is always changing in search engine optimization. What is a cutting edge idea one day may be considered outdated or even “outlawed” the next. There will always be people who try to take advantage of loopholes in the system, and attempt to trick the search engines to list a web site for keywords that are not relevant to it. While this may work for the very short term, it will get your site banned from most major search engines. If someone promises that they can get you listed fast, chances are they are using these techniques. See Google’s tips on what to look out for when choosing an SEO firm.
